22 Nov Giving back on #GivingTuesday
Every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, we participate in #GivingTuesday, a chance for people to give back to the organizations that mean the most to them. This isn’t just a time for donating funds to causes, it is a time for showing your appreciation.
The DSC isn’t just about building a community (though that is a HUGE part of what we do), it is also about education and support. Our events and community groups are meant to help families connect and share their experiences, and we also help families and people with Down syndrome through The Learning Program, Understanding Adolescence & Puberty, and our soon to launch Ready, Set, Kindergarten.
Your donations go DIRECTLY to programs like these. Your support provides new parents with the information they need. It helps us promote advocacy programs, and put on events like the yearly fashion show.
You, our community, directly helps education programs like:
Understanding Adolescence and Puberty Program. Teens and tweens with Down syndrome go through puberty during the same years as their typically developing peers and as with all children, they have questions and concerns about the changes affecting their bodies during this time of their life. The DSC partnered with Dr. Rebecca Partridge of the Down Syndrome Program at Virginia Mason to create a class designed for adolescents with Down syndrome and their parents that is specific to their development. The program is engaging, interactive and full of useful information that benefits our tween and teen community. Learn more…
Ready, Set, Kindergarten is a new program sponsored by the DSC making its debut in January of 2018. Designed for parents with kids entering Kindergarten in Fall 2018, this program aims to assist them in their goals for Inclusive Education for their children. At monthly meetings the parents will gain valuable tools to advocate for their children. Once the students enter kindergarten, the parents will continue to offer each other support in their Inclusive goals. More information will be posted shortly.
The Puget Sound Buddy Walk ® brings together family, friends, professionals and community leaders from across Puget Sound for a day of celebration to promote acceptance, inclusion and respect of individuals with Down syndrome. This year we are celebrated the 21st Annual Puget Sound Buddy Walk® which was one of more than 250 walks nationwide that raise awareness and funds to benefit individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The Buddy Walk® was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. Learn more…
Thank you to you, our community. We wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and look forward to another awesome year with you.
