30 Jul Self-Advocate: Devon Adelman
What does DSC board member Devon Adelman have in common with Seattle Seahawks greats like Jim Zorn, Matt Hasselbeck, Steve Largent, and Marshawn Lynch? Or USA Olympic athletes Courtney Thompson, Apolo Ohno, Emily Silver, and Ariana Kukors? What about the ever popular Mariners Edgar Martinez, Dan Wilson, and Kyle Seager? Self advocate Devon, along with numerous soccer and basketball stars, other former and current professional athletes, various coaches and broadcasters, and even a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend (Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses), are all official 2018 Special Olympics USA Games Ambassadors.
Her ambassador duties include promoting the USA games being held here in Seattle next year. If you are local in Washington State, you have probably seen or heard Dev on television or the radio. We are so very proud of her and thought we’d take a moment to brag about the many recent accomplishments of one of our own!
Dev recently participated in the Opening of the Games press conference at Century Link, spoke with Ray Roberts at the Seattle Sports Commission, gave the opening remarks at a major golf championship and spoke to the Seattle Chamber of Commerce.
She also helped promote the Special Olympics fundraiser ‘Rise With Us’ (at the Seattle Great Wheel) with TV spots on KING 5, KOMO 4, and Q13 alongside former Seahawk Jordan Babineaux, and a radio interview with Shellie Hart from Warm 106.9. The event was wildly successful! https://www.specialolympicsusagames.org/party/
Devon was also actively promoting Special Olympics Washington events like the Law Enforcement Torch Run and the Puget Sound Dream House raffle through radio interviews on KIRO 97.3’s The Ron and Don Show and TV commercials with Olympian Apolo Ohno.
Amongst all the Special Olympics promotions, Dev also took part in the self advocate round table for the new WIN initiative https://www.welcomein.org/, spoke at Assumption St. Bridget K-8 about Down syndrome for World Down Syndrome Day, was the featured speaker for Friendship Adventures’ Spring Auction, and attended the NDSS Buddy Walk on Washington educating Senators and Representatives – which lead to her current summer internship with Senator Maria Cantwell!
And because Dev obviously likes to stay busy, she recently graduated from Highline College with her high school diploma and comprehensive transition certificate. https://achieve.highline.edu/index.php
We at the Down Syndrome Community of Puget Sound are so very proud of Dev and all of her work promoting the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games and Special Olympics Washington. We are inspired by her commitment to be a self advocate who is dedicated to speaking about Down syndrome, participating and excelling in the various programs offered to her, and being a leader and voice in our community. Thank you, Devon. Keep up the great work!!
